India’s automobile exports faced temporary disruption in August as a shortage of vessels, linked to the ongoing West Asia conflict, constrained shipments from Indian ports to overseas markets. Major exporters including Maruti Suzuki India and Hyundai Motor India were affected.

Maruti Suzuki exported 33,844 vehicles in August, down from 36,538 units a year earlier. The company said demand remained strong across its international markets, but a lack of available liner vessels left vehicles waiting at ports for shipment.

Despite the August disruption, Maruti’s exports during April–August reached 188,636 vehicles, marking a 14.1% increase from the same period last year. The automaker continues to serve around 120 overseas markets, with Latin America accounting for significant volumes and requiring longer shipping routes.

Hyundai Motor India also reported an impact on August exports due to logistical constraints arising from the West Asia conflict and wider geopolitical tensions. The company expects export demand to remain strong as shipping conditions and the regional situation improve.

Industry players view the vessel shortage as a temporary capacity and logistics issue rather than a decline in global demand for Indian vehicles. Automakers are continuing production and maintaining inventories at ports while monitoring vessel availability.
