Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) held a naming ceremony on September 10, 2026, at Hanwha Ocean’s Geoje Shipyard in South Korea for the world’s first LNG carrier equipped with two Wind Challenger hard sail wind-assisted propulsion systems.
The vessel, named FUJIN SAILOR, will be delivered to Chevron Corporation under a long-term charter contract at the end of September 2026. Chevron’s President of Supply & Trading, Molly T. Laegeler, served as the vessel’s Godmother and formally named the vessel.
FUJIN SAILOR is the world’s first LNG carrier fitted with wind-assisted propulsion and the first vessel of any type equipped with two Wind Challenger units. It is the fourth vessel in the MOL Group fleet to feature the technology.
The Wind Challenger system is designed to reduce fuel consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional propulsion, marking a significant step in applying wind-assisted propulsion to LNG transportation.
MOL plans to introduce Wind Challenger technology on 25 vessels by 2030 and 80 vessels by 2035 as part of its strategy to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
