RSGT Bangladesh has achieved up to 58 container moves and 82 TEUs per hour while handling CMA CGM vessel MV WANEN at Patenga Container Terminal, setting what the operator described as a new productivity benchmark for Bangladesh’s port sector.
The milestone was recorded on 10 September during the terminal’s first gearless vessel operation using newly commissioned Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes.
According to RSGT Bangladesh, the productivity level is nearly double the historical performance at Chattogram Port, where container vessels have traditionally averaged around 30 moves or 48 TEUs per hour.
The operator said the deployment of modern STS cranes, combined with international terminal operating practices, skilled manpower and disciplined operations, was central to the achievement.
Higher quay-side productivity is expected to help reduce vessel turnaround times, improve berth utilisation and lower vessel-related costs, contributing to greater efficiency across Bangladesh’s maritime supply chain.
“Reaching 58 moves / 82 TEUs per hour is more than a productivity achievement – it demonstrates the potential of modern port operations in Bangladesh,” said Erwin Haaze, CEO of RSGT Bangladesh.
He said the result reflected the combination of technology, international experience, disciplined operations and a skilled workforce, adding that RSGT Bangladesh remained committed to continuously raising operational standards and delivering safe, efficient and reliable services.
The newly commissioned STS cranes are particularly important for handling gearless container vessels, which rely on shore-based cranes rather than vessel-mounted cargo-handling equipment. Their deployment is expected to enable the terminal to handle larger container volumes more efficiently and reduce dependence on shipboard gear.
RSGT Bangladesh said the achievement strengthens its plans to develop Patenga Container Terminal as a more efficient and globally connected maritime gateway. The operator also plans continued investment in infrastructure, technology, operational systems and workforce development to support Bangladesh’s growing trade.
Patenga Container Terminal is one of Bangladesh’s newer container-handling facilities and forms part of wider efforts to expand capacity and improve operational efficiency at Chattogram Port, the country’s principal seaport.
RSGT Bangladesh noted that the 58 moves/82 TEUs per hour figure was achieved during a specific vessel operation and should not be interpreted as the terminal’s sustained average productivity.
