Russian sunflower oil exports to India increased 34.7% during the first seven months of 2026, highlighting the growing role of Russia in India’s edible-oil import basket.
The rise comes as India continues to rely heavily on imports to meet domestic demand for edible oils. Sunflower oil remains an important segment of the market, alongside palm and soybean oils.
Russia has strengthened its position in the Indian market as refiners and importers seek competitive supplies amid changes in global edible-oil prices and availability. Higher shipments from Russia also reflect continued trade flows between the two countries in agricultural commodities.
India is one of the world’s largest edible-oil importers, with domestic production insufficient to meet consumption requirements. Import volumes therefore remain sensitive to international prices, freight costs, currency movements and supplies from major producing countries.
The increase in Russian sunflower oil exports also comes as India diversifies its sourcing of vegetable oils. Changes in global production and export availability can influence the relative competitiveness of sunflower oil against palm and soybean oil.
For Russian suppliers, India represents a major and growing destination for vegetable-oil exports. Stronger shipments could further deepen agricultural trade between the two countries.
The 34.7% increase in the January-July 2026 period underscores the expanding trade flow and highlights Russia’s growing presence in India’s sunflower oil import market.
