The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has nominated a new government director Mr. Vipul Singhal to the board of Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), strengthening government representation at the state-owned shipping company.
The appointment is part of the ministry’s administrative oversight of SCI, India’s national flag carrier and one of the country’s major shipping companies.
The new nominee director will participate in the company’s board-level deliberations and contribute to decisions relating to SCI’s operations, business strategy and future growth.
SCI operates across several segments of the maritime industry, including crude oil and product tankers, bulk carriers, container vessels and offshore support services. The company plays an important role in supporting India’s maritime transport and energy-security requirements.
The change in board representation comes as India continues to focus on expanding its domestic shipping capacity and strengthening the country’s maritime sector. Government-owned shipping companies are expected to play a role in efforts to increase Indian-flagged tonnage and reduce dependence on foreign-flagged vessels.
The Shipping Ministry’s latest nomination will provide continuity in government representation on SCI’s board while supporting coordination between the ministry and the company on key maritime-sector priorities.
