Karnataka has exported GI-tagged Gulbarga Tur Dal to the Maldives, marking another step in promoting the state’s distinctive agricultural products in international markets.
The export highlights the growing demand for India’s geographically identified food products and provides farmers and processors in the Gulbarga (Kalaburagi) region with opportunities to access overseas markets.
Gulbarga Tur Dal is known for its distinctive taste and quality and has received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, recognising its unique association with the region. The product is an important agricultural commodity for farmers in northern Karnataka.
The shipment to the Maldives is expected to strengthen the presence of Karnataka’s GI-tagged agricultural products in international markets while supporting efforts to diversify India’s agricultural exports.
The export also demonstrates the potential for GI-tagged products to create greater value for farmers by connecting region-specific produce with international consumers. Government agencies and export bodies have been encouraging the promotion of such products as part of India’s strategy to expand agricultural and processed-food exports.
The Maldives, with its dependence on food imports, remains an important nearby market for Indian agricultural products. The latest shipment adds to India’s efforts to strengthen food and trade links with neighbouring countries.
