Peru’s Port of Callao is set to increase its refrigerated container, or reefer, capacity by 25%, strengthening the port’s ability to handle temperature-sensitive cargo and support the country’s growing perishable-goods trade.

The expansion will provide additional reefer plugs for refrigerated containers, which require continuous electrical power while stored at the terminal. The increased capacity is expected to support cargo such as fresh produce, seafood and other temperature-sensitive products moving through Peru’s main maritime gateway.

Callao is a key hub for Peru’s international trade and handles a significant share of the country’s containerised exports and imports. Growing demand for refrigerated logistics has increased the need for reliable port infrastructure, particularly as Peru continues to expand its agricultural and food exports.

Additional reefer capacity can help terminals manage larger volumes of temperature-controlled containers while reducing pressure on existing infrastructure during peak periods. It can also provide exporters with greater flexibility when planning shipments and help maintain cargo quality throughout the port-handling process.

Peru has strengthened its position as a supplier of agricultural products to international markets, with products such as grapes, blueberries, avocados and other fresh produce forming an important part of its export trade. Efficient cold-chain infrastructure is therefore increasingly important for maintaining product quality and meeting delivery requirements in overseas markets.

The 25% increase in reefer plugs is expected to enhance Callao’s ability to accommodate this expanding trade. Better refrigerated-container infrastructure can also support shipping lines and logistics operators by improving terminal handling capacity and cargo-flow management.

The investment highlights the growing importance of cold-chain infrastructure within global maritime logistics. As demand for Peruvian fresh produce and other temperature-sensitive commodities increases, expanded reefer facilities at Callao will play a role in supporting exporters and maintaining reliable connections with international markets.
