The Ahmedabad Division of Western Railway recorded a 7% increase in freight revenue in September, reflecting continued growth in freight movement across the division.

The rise in revenue highlights the division’s contribution to Western Railway’s freight business and its role in supporting the movement of commodities and industrial cargo across Gujarat and other parts of the country.

Freight traffic handled by the division includes key commodities such as containers, petroleum products, cement, chemicals, fertilisers and other bulk and industrial goods. The availability of rail-based transportation provides industries with an alternative to road freight, particularly for large-volume and long-distance cargo.

The growth in freight revenue also reflects efforts by Indian Railways to attract additional freight traffic through improved operational efficiency, better connectivity and customer-focused logistics services. Rail freight can offer shippers advantages in terms of capacity and economies of scale, particularly for bulk commodities.

Ahmedabad is an important commercial and industrial centre, while Gujarat has a strong manufacturing, petrochemical, chemical and export-oriented industrial base. The division’s rail network therefore plays an important role in connecting production centres with markets, ports and logistics hubs.

Higher freight revenue provides an additional source of earnings for the railway system while supporting the broader movement of goods across the national supply chain. Efficient rail connectivity is particularly important for industries that depend on regular movement of raw materials and finished products.

Western Railway has continued to focus on increasing freight volumes and improving the utilisation of its network. Greater coordination with industries, terminals and logistics operators can help further expand rail’s share of the freight market.

The 7% increase in Ahmedabad Division’s freight revenue in September underlines the continued importance of rail transportation in India’s logistics network and highlights the division’s contribution to the country’s freight movement.
