Trial operations for moving automobile rakes have begun at the Vallarpadam rail siding in Kerala, marking a step towards expanding rail-based transportation for vehicles through the region.

The trials are aimed at assessing the operational readiness of the siding and its connectivity with the wider rail network for handling automobile consignments. The facility could support the movement of vehicles by rail from manufacturing and distribution centres to markets and logistics hubs.

Rail-based automobile transportation can help reduce dependence on road networks, improve cargo movement efficiency and lower logistics costs for manufacturers and distributors. It can also contribute to reducing congestion and emissions associated with long-distance road transportation.

The Vallarpadam facility is strategically located near the International Container Transshipment Terminal and the broader logistics network around Kochi. The trial movement is expected to provide operational experience in handling automobile rakes, including loading, unloading and rail-side coordination.

If regular services are introduced following the trials, the facility could strengthen multimodal logistics connectivity in Kerala and provide automobile companies with an additional transportation option.

Further operational plans and the commencement of regular automobile rake services are expected to depend on the outcome of the trials and coordination among the railway and logistics stakeholders.
