The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), Government of India, has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the World Maritime University (WMU), Malmö, Sweden, to establish the C.P. Srivastava Chair at WMU.

The Chair honours the legacy of Dr. C.P. Srivastava, the longest-serving Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and a key figure in the establishment of WMU and the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI).

The initiative will promote maritime research, education and capacity building, with a focus on maritime governance, safety, maritime law, sustainable shipping, ocean governance, environmental sustainability and technological innovation.

The MoA was signed in the presence of Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, WMU President Prof. Maximo Q. Mejia Jr., MoPSW Secretary Vijay Kumar, and senior officials from MoPSW, DGMA, Indian Maritime University, Indian Ports Association and WMU.

The establishment of the Chair is expected to deepen India–WMU cooperation and strengthen India’s contribution to global maritime governance and a safe, sustainable and rules-based maritime future.
