Tuticorin Container Terminal, operated by J M Baxi Ports & Logistics at V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port, has taken a significant step towards sustainable port operations with the flagging off of its fleet of Electric Internal Transfer Vehicles (E-ITVs) on October 20, 2026.
The fleet was flagged off by Vijay Kumar, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, in the presence of Susanta Purohit, IRSEE, Chairman, and Rajesh Soundararajan, IAS, Deputy Chairman of VOC Port.
The induction of electric internal transfer vehicles marks an important milestone in the terminal’s efforts to reduce emissions and transition towards cleaner cargo-handling operations. The deployment supports the Green Port initiative and reflects the growing adoption of electric mobility in port infrastructure.
According to a company communique, the transition to fully electric operational vehicles is aimed at reducing the terminal’s carbon footprint while contributing to India’s broader decarbonisation goals.
The initiative underscores the increasing focus on sustainable equipment and environmentally responsible operations across India’s maritime sector, as ports and terminal operators work towards improving energy efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of cargo movement.
