Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), in partnership with CMB.TECH, has celebrated the joint naming of the world’s first three ammonia-fuelled Capesize bulk carriers, marking a significant milestone in the maritime industry’s transition towards cleaner fuels.

The naming ceremony was held on October 29, 2026, for the three vessels – RURI MIRAI, RURI SEKAI and RURI HIKARI – developed jointly by MOL and CMB.TECH.

The groundbreaking vessels represent an important advancement in the adoption of next-generation marine fuels and the decarbonisation of ocean shipping.

MOL, as co-owner and charterer of the vessels, is working closely with its partners and stakeholders to ensure their safe operation. The vessels are expected to form MOL’s first net-zero-emission fleet, supporting the company’s ambition to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The project highlights the growing role of ammonia as an alternative marine fuel and reflects the shipping industry’s efforts to accelerate the development and deployment of low- and zero-emission vessel technologies.

MOL acknowledged the contribution of CMB.TECH and all project partners in bringing the pioneering initiative to fruition, reaffirming its commitment to building a cleaner and more sustainable future for global shipping.
