Under the leadership of their Chief Logistics Officer, Mr. Venkateswar Rao, Jindal Stainless Ltd (JSL) has initiated a novel approach to transport stainless steel coil consignments within India. JSL leveraged coastal shipping to transport these steel coils in containers from Paradeep to Chennai. The consignment was skillfully loaded onto the vessel MV SSL Thamirabarani V-14 at Paradeep International Cargo Terminal. On the 29th of September, at approximately 15:30 hours, the vessel embarked on its journey.

This initiative is a significant departure from the conventional transportation methods prevalent in India’s iron and steel sector. Traditionally, outbound steel products are primarily transported via road and rail, with minimal reliance on coastal shipment. Remarkably, in India, nearly 47% of steel is transported by road, in stark contrast to the global average of 20-30%. The global share of coastal movement is significantly higher, standing at approximately 20%.

JSL’s decision to utilize coastal shipping is not only environmentally responsible but also cost-effective and fuel-efficient. Coastal movement is recognized for its lower fuel consumption and substantially reduced carbon emissions, making it a sustainable and forward-thinking choice in comparison to other modes of transportation.

This move by Jindal Stainless Ltd sets a noteworthy precedent for sustainable logistics in the steel industry and contributes to India’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
