N K Premachandran, MP, said that immigration check post should be started at Kollam Port using the facilities provided by the state government and more time should be allowed to prepare the facilities as per the requirements of the central government.

“Kollam Port is a naturally endowed port with sufficient facilities to serve foreign ships as well. Lack of immigration facility is a hindrance to the development of the port. Kollam Port can provide various services to foreign vessels including cargo handling, importation, passenger handling, maintenance, crew change, etc.,’’ Premachandran said in the Lok Sabha.

The international shipping channel passes close to Kollam Port and ships can anchor safely even during rough seas. If proper development of the port is made possible, great progress can be made in Kollam’s trade and commerce sector.
