The government will import 20,000 tonnes of onions and 50,000 tonnes of sugar from neighboring India immediately in response to the growing concerns over price hikes of food products ahead of the month of Ramadan.
Ahasanul Islam Titu, state minister for commerce, said this while talking to reporters at his village house in Delduar upazila in Tangail on Friday.
India has suspended the export of goods to Bangladesh for a long period but it will resume the export before Ramadan, Titu said, adding that the commerce ministry has already talked to its Indian counterpart to this end.
