Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has now recorded a double-digit year on year growth in cargo for six consecutive months thanks to export cargo growth.
The airport saw its cargo volumes increase by 17.6% year on year in June to 417,000 tonnes, according to data released by Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK).
Export cargo increased by 24.9% compared to the same month last year. “Among key trading regions, cargo traffic to and from North America, Europe and Southeast Asia increased most significantly during the month,” said the airport authority.
On a 12-month rolling basis, there was a 14.8% increase in cargo throughput to 4.7m tonnes.
HKIA last year retained its position as the world’s busiest cargo airport.
The airport registered a 3.3% year-on-year increase in cargo volumes in 2023 to 4.3m tonnes. It was the 13th time since 2010 that HKIA has been the busiest cargo airport in the world.
E-commerce is amongst the drivers for growth at the airport, while there is also plenty of investment by stakeholders at the airport.
At the end of last year, Cathay Cargo Terminal extended its intermodal cargo handling operation between HKIA and the Dongguan Logistics Park.
AAHK also signed an agreement with China’s Dongguan Port Group to establish a joint venture for the development of a novel sea-air intermodal transshipment facility.
Plus, UPS entered into an agreement with AAHK todevelop a 20,000 sq m facility with direct access to aircraft and located close to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.
