Japanese shipping leader NYK has signed a landmark agreement to transport green ammonia to Japan, partnering with Kyushu Electric Power Company, Sojitz Corporation, and Sembcorp Green Hydrogen, a subsidiary of Singapore’s state-owned Semcorp. The agreement, finalized on August 20, 2024, in Delhi, India, aims to leverage India’s rich renewable energy resources to produce competitively priced green ammonia.
The collaboration follows an earlier basic agreement between Kyushu Electric, Sojitz, and Sembcorp to supply green ammonia to various industrial players in Japan, focusing primarily on the Kyushu region. The project is set to produce around 200,000 metric tons of green ammonia annually, which will be shipped to the Kyushu area.
Green ammonia is generated using renewable energy, with no CO2 emissions during its production or use, positioning it as a crucial component in the transition to a decarbonized energy landscape. NYK plans to support the development of next-generation energy supply chains in Japan, including the Kyushu region, through its marine transport services.
In a related development, NYK recently achieved a significant milestone by performing the world’s first truck-to-ship bunkering of ammonia for an ammonia-fueled tugboat. The vessel, set to be completed by the end of August 2024, will be the world’s first commercially operated ammonia-fueled ship, marking a major advance in maritime green energy technology.
