Minister of ports V N Vasavan said on Saturday that in the coming days many more container ships are set to dock at Vizhinjam port.

Speaking at a review of the operations during a visit to the Vizhinjam transshipment port, Vasavan said MSC Deila, the mothership that has docked now, is bigger than the first mothership, San Fernando, that arrived at the port.

“The containers from the ship will be picked up by small ships and will be taken to Colombo .” The ship brings around 1,200 containers.

The arrival of these ships shows that international shipping companies are interested in sending their ships to Vizhinjam, he added. The trial run is progressing for the commissioning of the port by the end of Oct. Mentioning the Rs 2,100 crore loan agreement signed with National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard), the minister said the govt is working for the speedier commissioning of the port.

The feeder vessel MSC Adu V has reached Vizhinjam port on Saturday and will berth on Sunday morning, said a port official, while MSC Deila will depart on Sunday.
