AD Ports Group has joined forces with CMA CGM Group and Ecocean, an innovative company dedicated to aquatic biodiversity. The three parties have formalized a scientific cooperation framework agreement to introduce 48 Biohuts at Khalifa Port in UAE.
The Biohut module, designed to enhance biodiversity and foster marine life in coastal and harbour areas, is an underwater structure providing a secure habitat for marine species to flourish. Specifically crafted to serve as a refuge and breeding ground for various marine life, including fish, crustaceans, and other essential species for coastal ecosystems, the Biohut plays a crucial role in areas impacted by human activities.
Additionally, constructed as modular cages using eco-friendly, non-toxic materials, the Biohut modules offer a sturdy, protective environment for marine wildlife while minimizing their ecological footprint. These structures will be strategically placed in Khalifa Port’s identified areas requiring support and regeneration. The deployment of Biohuts at the port is scheduled for Q1 2024, particularly at CMA CGM’s upcoming terminal, currently in the construction phase. The initial phase will span five years, inclusive of a monitoring component.
According to a statement, this initiative aligns with the long-term commitment of both parties to marine and terrestrial biodiversity, focusing on key pillars such as mitigating the impact of activities, rejuvenating fragile ecosystems, safeguarding endangered species, and promoting research and innovation. By integrating responsible management practices, marine conservation, and environmental innovation, the project aims to preserve marine biodiversity and the delicate ecosystems of our oceans.
