Antara Cruises has announced plans to invest ₹5 billion to expand its luxury river cruise operations on the Brahmaputra, reinforcing its commitment to developing inland water tourism and supporting the growth of cruise infrastructure in Northeast India.
The investment will be used to expand the company’s fleet, enhance passenger facilities, and strengthen operational infrastructure along the Brahmaputra River. The initiative is aimed at meeting rising demand for premium river cruise experiences while promoting the region as a major destination for domestic and international tourists.
As part of the expansion, Antara Cruises plans to introduce new vessels equipped with modern amenities and sustainable technologies, offering travellers greater comfort and access to destinations across Assam and other northeastern states. The company also intends to work closely with local stakeholders to improve tourism infrastructure and visitor experiences.
The expansion aligns with the Government of India’s efforts to promote inland waterways under the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and the Cruise Bharat Mission. Improved river cruise services are expected to boost tourism, generate employment, support local businesses, and enhance economic activity across the Brahmaputra basin.
Industry experts believe the investment will strengthen the Brahmaputra’s position as one of India’s premier river cruise destinations, known for its rich biodiversity, cultural heritage, and scenic landscapes. The project is also expected to encourage greater private sector participation in the country’s inland water transport and tourism sectors.
With the ₹5 billion investment, Antara Cruises aims to expand its footprint in the fast-growing river cruise market while contributing to sustainable tourism development and improved connectivity across Northeast India.
