Oman-based Asyad Shipping has sold three ageing tankers for a combined $178 million, as the company continues to adjust its fleet and focus on the efficiency and long-term value of its shipping assets.

The divestment involves three older tanker vessels and forms part of the company’s broader fleet-management strategy. Selling older tonnage can help shipowners reduce maintenance and operating costs while releasing capital for newer and more efficient vessels.

The transaction comes as tanker markets continue to be influenced by vessel availability, crude and refined-product trade flows, freight rates and changing environmental requirements. Older tankers face increasing compliance and operational costs as the industry moves towards tighter emissions standards.

For Asyad, fleet optimisation is also aimed at maintaining a competitive and commercially efficient vessel portfolio. Proceeds from the sale could provide additional financial flexibility for future fleet investments and other strategic initiatives.

The tanker sector has seen strong interest in second-hand vessels in recent years, supported by constrained fleet growth and demand for seaborne energy transportation. However, ageing vessels can require higher spending on maintenance, dry-docking and regulatory compliance.

The $178 million sale of the three tankers therefore represents both a fleet-renewal step and a capital-management move for Asyad Shipping.

The company is expected to continue evaluating its fleet based on vessel age, market conditions and commercial prospects as it seeks to maintain an efficient and competitive tanker portfolio.
