Comptroller & Auditor General (C&AG) K Sanjay Murthy on Sunday announced a major push to strengthen audits of Urban Local Governments, citing the rapid pace of urbanisation and the need to enhance quality of life in cities. Speaking at an Audit Day event presided over by Vice President C P Radhakrishnan, Murthy said the audit will assess progress under the Ease of Living theme across 101 major cities, focusing on infrastructure, environmental sustainability and local economic growth.
Murthy also unveiled plans to audit the country’s multi-modal transport and logistics ecosystem, with special emphasis on Indian Railways, in line with the government’s goal of reducing logistics costs to single digits. The C&AG has already held consultations with port authorities, railways, train operators and freight players to gather insights.
As part of its digital transformation, the C&AG launched the CAG-Connect Portal to link nearly 10 lakh auditee entities with audit offices in real time, along with an indigenously developed Large Language Model—CAG-LLM—to help analyse the department’s vast repository of inspection reports.
Additional audits have been initiated on Ease of Doing Business for MSMEs and on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy to support national development priorities.
