Capt. B.K. Tyagi, Chairman and Managing Director of Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. (SCI), has been elected President of the Indian National Shipowners’ Association (INSA) for the 2026–27 term.
The election was held at the 46th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of INSA on September 24, 2026.
Capt. Tyagi brings more than three decades of experience in the maritime and shipping sector. He began his career with SCI in 1990 as a Trainee Nautical Officer and subsequently served at sea in various capacities, including as Master. After moving ashore in 2004, he held senior responsibilities across technical operations, vetting, chartering, training, marine human resources, liner and passenger services, inland waterways, offshore operations and ship sale and purchase.
He assumed charge as CMD of SCI on September 3, 2022, and has since been closely associated with initiatives aimed at strengthening the company’s fleet, operational capabilities and contribution to India’s maritime growth.
His election as INSA President comes at a significant time for the Indian shipping industry, with increasing policy focus on expanding Indian-flag tonnage, strengthening domestic shipbuilding, developing a competitive maritime ecosystem and enhancing India’s participation in global shipping.
As the apex association representing Indian shipowners, INSA engages with the Government, maritime authorities and other stakeholders on a wide range of issues concerning shipping policy, regulation, taxation, ship acquisition, seafarers, maritime infrastructure and the overall competitiveness of the Indian shipping sector.
Capt. Tyagi has also been associated with several maritime institutions and industry bodies and has participated in policy initiatives relating to shipbuilding, green shipping, alternative fuels, ports and maritime development.
His election is expected to provide further industry-level leadership on matters concerning the growth and competitiveness of the Indian shipping sector during the 2026–27 term.
The INSA presidency will place Capt. Tyagi at the forefront of industry engagement with the Government and other stakeholders as India seeks to expand its maritime capacity and strengthen the role of Indian shipowners in the global shipping industry.
