Four Indian nationals were killed and another was critically injured after a cargo vessel came under attack off Ukraine’s Odesa coast, highlighting the continued risks faced by merchant shipping operating in the Black Sea region amid the ongoing conflict.
According to official reports, the vessel was struck while operating near the port of Odesa, causing significant damage and resulting in multiple casualties among the crew. Emergency response teams attended to the injured, while the critically wounded Indian seafarer was taken for urgent medical treatment.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and said it is in close contact with Ukrainian authorities, the Indian Embassy, and the vessel’s management to facilitate assistance and the repatriation of the victims. Efforts are also underway to support the injured crew member and provide necessary consular assistance.
