The Central Railway (CR) has recorded a freight loading of 67.11 million tonnes (MT) and a revenue of about ₹7,217 crore for the financial year 2024-25 up to January 31. The Nagpur division contributed the highest share, handling 36.85 MT, which accounts for 55 per cent of the total freight loading, followed by Mumbai division with 19.04 MT, contributing 28 per cent.
In January 2025 alone, the Central Railway loaded 7.83 MT, with Nagpur division handling 4.48 MT (57 per cent) and Mumbai Division handling 2.14 MT (27 per cent). The Central Railway has seen notable growth in container transport and the movement of sugar and petroleum products, boosting its overall performance compared to the previous year.
The loading of sugar increased significantly, with 62 rakes dispatched in January 2025 compared to 50 in January 2024, marking a 24 per cent rise. Pune division performed particularly well, loading 37 rakes in January 2025, up from 18 rakes in the same period last year, reflecting a 105 per cent increase.
Container transportation also showed an upward trend, with 847 rakes loaded in January 2025, a 15.7 per cent increase from the 732 rakes in January 2024.
Petroleum product shipments grew by 10.1 per cent, with 219 rakes loaded in January 2025 compared to 199 in the same month last year. The movement of de-oiled cakes saw a 10.5 per cent rise, with 21 rakes transported in January 2025 compared to 19 in January 2024.
Additionally, 631 container rakes were dispatched from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) terminal, up from 592 in January 2024, reflecting a 14.3 per cent increase.
Freight revenue for January 2025 stood at ₹800.07 crore, with Nagpur division contributing ₹445.07 crore (56 per cent) and Mumbai division generating ₹221.63 crore (28 per cent). Nagpur division’s total freight revenue for the financial year up to January 31 was ₹3,849.67 crore, while Mumbai division recorded ₹2,076.55 crore.
