The Chennai Division of Southern Railway has recorded a strong freight performance in the financial year 2025–26, achieving total freight revenue of ₹1,289.78 crore while diversifying its cargo portfolio with new traffic streams.
During the year, the Division marked a significant milestone by handling steel pipe consignments for the first time from Chennai Harbour (Jawahar Dock) to Ponmalai, home to the Golden Rock Railway Workshop boiler plant facility.
In line with green logistics initiatives, the Division also commenced transportation of electric vehicles. Shipments included Montra Electric autos moved from Tada to Rangapani, and Mahindra Electric autos transported from Jolarpettai to Salchapra and Jirania stations under the Northeast Frontier Railway network.
Further expanding its logistics footprint, container traffic for the Central Warehousing Corporation was introduced from Korukkupet Goods Shed to Noli in Delhi Division, strengthening long-distance cargo connectivity.
The Division also revived key freight services, including Truck-on-Train (ToT) operations, moving 430 trucks from Singaperumalkoil to Farukhnagar, demonstrating renewed demand for multimodal transport solutions.
On the infrastructure front, Chennai Division commissioned its second Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal at Anuppampattu village near Ponneri, enhancing capacity and efficiency in freight handling.
The achievements highlight the Division’s continued focus on innovation, sustainability, and strengthening its role in India’s logistics ecosystem.
