China’s railway system saw record-breaking passenger volume and steady cargo growth during the just concluded Labor Day holiday travel rush, reflecting a robust recovery in both domestic mobility and logistics demand, according to the national railway operator China State Railway Group on Wednesday.

From April 29 to May 6, a total of 151 million passenger trips were made on the national railway network, marking a year-on-year increase of 10.6 percent. May 1 alone witnessed 23.12 million passenger trips, setting a new single-day record for passenger volume.

The number of passenger trains in operation reached an average of 12,801 per day, a 6.8 percent increase year-on-year. On May 1, the network operated 13,752 train services, marking the highest single-day passenger transport capacity in history.

In addition to strong passenger figures, freight operations also saw solid performance. Over the eight-day period, the railway system transported 89.48 million metric tons of cargo, up 4.6 percent compared with the same period last year.

The country’s railways maintained safe, stable and orderly operations throughout the holiday, the company said.
