French liner CMA CGM has ordered six 3,100-TEU container ships from China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Group’s Weihai shipyard, according to CSSC Ship Electric Technology. The programme also includes options for four additional vessels, although the options have not yet been exercised.
The vessels will measure 199.9 metres in length and 35.2 metres in beam, with a design draft of 8.5 metres. Each ship will be equipped with an 1,800-kW permanent-magnet shaft-generator system, capable of operating independently or alongside the vessel’s auxiliary generators.
Financial details, delivery schedules and the ships’ main fuel type have not been disclosed. The order further strengthens CMA CGM’s growing relationship with Chinese shipyards, where the carrier has been placing an increasing number of container-ship orders.
The latest contract also extends cooperation between CMA CGM and CSSC Ship Electric Technology, which secured an earlier order in 2025 to supply hybrid power systems for 12 18,000-TEU CMA CGM containerships.
The newbuild programme comes as CMA CGM continues to expand and renew its fleet, with Chinese yards playing an increasingly important role in its shipbuilding strategy.
