COSCO SHIPPING (North America) Inc. has released its 2024 Sustainability Report, highlighting achievements in environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and corporate governance across its operations in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Panama.
In 2024, sustainability became central to COSCO SHIPPING North America’s strategy.
The company advanced energy-efficient warehousing, low-sulfur fuel use, clean trucking initiatives, vessel speed reduction programmes, and sustainable office practices.
Shore power utilisation reached 100 per cent at the Port of Oakland and 96.5 per cent at Los Angeles and Long Beach.
Compliance with vessel speed reduction programmes under NOAA’s Protect Blue Whales and Blue Skies initiative exceeded 99 per cent.
Full compliance with EPA and CARB fuel standards was achieved, and the company received multiple environmental recognitions, including the Sapphire Award, Green Flag Certificates, Green Wave Award, and Blue Circle Award, while reporting zero violations under California’s Marine Invasive Species Program.
Social initiatives included a zero-incident safety record, reinforced policies on workplace violence, harassment, and substance use, and a focus on diversity and inclusion.
Community engagement initiatives supported local workforce development and environmental stewardship, including career fairs, backpack and holiday toy drives in Secaucus, beach cleanups in Panama, and tree-planting projects.
Governance was strengthened through oversight by the Board of Directors and its committees on strategy, compliance, financial reporting, cybersecurity, and sustainability-related risks.
The company upheld zero-tolerance policies on corruption and bribery, enhanced its Code of Conduct and compliance framework, and improved cybersecurity practices aligned with ISO 27001, including multi-factor authentication, data-loss prevention, and employee training.
Chen Zheyu, Chairman of COSCO SHIPPING North America, said: “Our 2024 Sustainability Report demonstrates how environmental responsibility, community partnership, and strong governance are embedded in every aspect of our operations.
“Looking ahead, we remain committed to advancing sustainability, empowering our people, and delivering resilient, innovative, and efficient supply chain solutions across North America.”
The report launch also highlighted COSCO SHIPPING North America’s contribution to the Secaucus Township holiday toy drive, with 75 gifts donated for children and families in need.
Looking forward, the company will integrate its sustainability strategy into corporate development, driving long-term growth through decarbonised operations, enhanced efficiency and digital visibility, strengthened leadership and inclusion, and expanded community engagement and transparency.
In October, the vessel ORCHID LEADER, operated by Guangzhou Yuanhai Auto Carrier – a subsidiary of COSCO Shipping Specialised – docked at the Jiangyin Port area of Fuzhou Port, marking the official launch of the Fuzhou–Persian Gulf direct shipping route.
