Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Kandla has demonstrated exceptional operational efficiency during the ongoing fertilizer season by ensuring smooth handling and timely evacuation of fertilizer cargo through dedicated infrastructure and coordinated stakeholder efforts.
To streamline fertilizer imports, the Port has earmarked two dedicated berths exclusively for fertilizer vessels, with berthing carried out strictly on the basis of vessel seniority. This has helped reduce waiting time and ensured uninterrupted vessel operations.
The Port’s newly constructed warehouses have substantially increased storage capacity, enabling faster cargo handling and minimizing congestion within the port premises. Supporting these efforts, the Railway authorities have ensured the timely availability of rakes for cargo evacuation. On average, around 4.5 railway rakes are being loaded daily, matching the Port’s handling capacity and facilitating efficient onward movement of fertilizer cargo.
The seamless operations have been made possible through the coordinated efforts of the Deendayal Port Authority, Indian Railways, shipping agents, stevedores and other stakeholders, ensuring timely cargo evacuation and strengthening the fertilizer supply chain for the benefit of importers and farmers.
Under the leadership of Shri Sushil Kumar Singh, IRSME, Chairman, Deendayal Port Authority, the Port has implemented several infrastructure and operational initiatives aimed at improving efficiency, reducing vessel turnaround time and enhancing cargo movement. The development of modern warehousing facilities, capacity augmentation and continuous process improvements have significantly strengthened the Port’s fertilizer handling capabilities, reinforcing Kandla’s position as one of India’s leading gateways for fertilizer imports.
