DP World has launched a €53.8 million electrification project at its Constanța South Container Terminal in Romania, aiming to reduce emissions, improve operational efficiency and support the decarbonisation of maritime transport.
The project, announced on October 12, 2026, is co-financed by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility. Scheduled for completion by August 31, 2028, it will establish the electrical infrastructure needed to gradually replace fossil-fuel-powered equipment with electric alternatives.
A major component involves installing electrical infrastructure across 29 container blocks to support future electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes. The project will also establish a charging hub with 10 charging points and introduce 10 electric terminal tractors to support cargo-handling operations.
In addition, two onshore power supply systems will allow vessels at berth to draw electricity directly from the shore instead of running their auxiliary engines. The systems are designed to use electricity generated from renewable sources, helping reduce emissions and improve air quality around the terminal.
The project’s financing package includes an EU grant of up to €19.7 million, a loan of up to €25 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and a contribution from Constanța South Container Terminal.
The €53.8 million investment is the first phase of a broader €100 million electrification programme. A second phase, valued at €46.2 million, will cover additional electric cargo-handling equipment, including remotely operated electric gantry cranes, two electric mobile harbour cranes and more electric terminal tractors.
Located on the Black Sea, the Port of Constanța is a strategic gateway for regional and international trade and an important link in the Trans-European Transport Network. The electrification programme is expected to strengthen the terminal’s sustainability credentials while supporting cleaner and more efficient port operations.
The initiative forms part of DP World’s wider efforts to decarbonise logistics infrastructure and develop more sustainable supply chains.
