    The Port of Felixstowe in the UK and the Port of Charleston in the US have joined Lloyd’s Register and A.P. Moller–Maersk to examine what would be required for a future nuclear-powered containership to operate between the two ports.

    The initiative, known as the “Pink Corridor” project, will study the operational, security and safeguarding requirements associated with a theoretical nuclear-powered container service linking the UK and US. The project remains conceptual, with no specific vessel deployment or service launch planned at this stage.

    Focus on Port Access and Safety

    The study will use a conceptual nuclear-powered containership to assess the requirements for port access along the proposed Felixstowe–Charleston route.

    Key areas under examination include ship security, nuclear safeguards, cyber resilience, emergency response, insurance arrangements and coordination between maritime and nuclear regulatory frameworks.

    For the participating ports, the study is intended to identify the practical infrastructure, operational procedures and regulatory conditions that would need to be addressed before nuclear-powered merchant vessels could potentially call at commercial terminals.

    Supporting Future Nuclear Shipping Regulation

    Lloyd’s Register said the project will help stakeholders understand the gaps and requirements that would need to be resolved for the safe, secure and responsible adoption of nuclear propulsion in transatlantic commercial shipping.

    The initiative builds on earlier work by Lloyd’s Register and CORE POWER on the regulatory requirements for advanced nuclear propulsion in commercial vessels. That work was subsequently developed with Maersk through a joint development project examining the safety, operational and regulatory aspects of nuclear-powered container shipping.

    The project is also linked to broader UK-US cooperation under the Technology Prosperity Deal, which includes exploration of civil maritime nuclear applications and the potential development of a shipping corridor between the two countries.

    Second Phase Could Follow

    The first phase of the Pink Corridor project will identify the principal operational, regulatory, security and safeguarding requirements. Its findings are expected to determine the scope of a possible second phase.

    Further work could examine engineering, legislation, regulation, security and nuclear safeguards in greater depth for nuclear-powered merchant vessels.

    The Felixstowe–Charleston concept therefore represents an early-stage assessment rather than a commitment to launch nuclear-powered container services. However, the participation of a major global shipping line, two leading container ports and a major classification society highlights growing industry interest in understanding how nuclear propulsion could eventually be integrated into commercial maritime trade.
