Rail services on the busy Howrah–Patna–Delhi main line were disrupted after a freight train derailed in Bihar’s Jamui district under the Asansol Division of Eastern Railway late Saturday night.

Railway officials said eight wagons of a cement-laden goods train went off the tracks between Lahabon and Simultala stations around 11:25 pm, affecting both the up and down lines. There were no reports of casualties.

Following the derailment, several passenger and express trains were either halted, diverted or rescheduled, causing inconvenience to travellers across Bihar and neighbouring states. Accident Relief Trains and senior railway officials rushed to the site, and restoration work was taken up on a war footing.

Eastern Railway said efforts were underway to clear the derailed wagons and restore normal traffic at the earliest. An inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the derailment.

Rail movement is expected to normalise gradually once track clearance and safety checks are completed.
