India’s maritime defence capabilities received a major boost with the launch of the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) Yard 3039, named Sanghmitra, at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers in Kolkata. The launch marks a significant milestone in India’s push towards indigenous shipbuilding and maritime self-reliance under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.

The ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Indian Navy, Ministry of Defence and the shipyard. Yard 3039 is part of the Indian Navy’s programme for the construction of 11 Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels aimed at enhancing coastal and offshore security operations.

Designed and built indigenously, the NGOPVs are equipped to undertake surveillance missions, anti-piracy operations, search and rescue duties, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, and protection of offshore assets. The project reflects India’s growing strength in advanced naval shipbuilding, driven by innovation, technical expertise and strong industry collaboration.

Indian Register of Shipping expressed pride in contributing to the prestigious programme and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the development of vessels that enhance the nation’s maritime preparedness and defence self-reliance.
