Indian garlic prices have seen a significant decrease of Rs 150 per kg due to an influx of supplies from local farms, coinciding with the new season harvest. This price drop has sparked optimism for lucrative export deals with major importers like Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Bangladesh.
In Choithram Mandi, garlic’s wholesale rate has fallen to Rs 100-200 per kg, a sharp contrast to the Rs 300-350 per kg rate just a week ago. Garlic exporter, Rohit Jain, commented, “Exports are all about competitive prices. In December, garlic exports had diminished due to higher prices but now with prices coming down, we expect better overseas orders.”
The daily arrival of garlic in the Choithram market has surged to around 10,000 bags from 1,000 bags in late January. Traders anticipate further increase in new season garlic supplies in the coming weeks due to higher production and expanded cultivation areas.
Mandsaur and Neemuch in Madhya Pradesh, contributing over 80% to the national export basket, remain the leading garlic producers and exporters.
