India’s Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has witnessed a dramatic expansion in its buyer ecosystem over the past decade, with the number of primary buyer organisations rising from 1,707 in FY 2016-17 to around 1.38 lakh in FY 2026-27.
The growth comes as GeM marks its 10th anniversary, highlighting the platform’s transformation into a major digital public procurement marketplace. Launched in August 2016, GeM was established to make government procurement more transparent, efficient and inclusive.
According to data released for the anniversary, GeM’s total order value has increased from just ₹422 crore in FY 2016-17 to ₹1,55,016 crore in FY 2026-27, while the number of orders has risen from 6,284 to more than 20.40 lakh.
The expansion has also been visible on the seller side. Profile-completed sellers increased from 3,339 to about 25.45 lakh, while the number of Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) registered on GeM rose from 2,424 to more than 12.25 lakh.
The wider participation underscores the growing role of digital procurement in connecting government buyers with businesses across the country. MSEs alone have fulfilled orders worth more than ₹9.07 lakh crore, accounting for around 45.6% of GeM’s cumulative GMV.
GeM has also crossed a major cumulative milestone, facilitating more than ₹20 lakh crore in Gross Merchandise Value through over 3.78 crore orders since its launch. In the first four months of FY 2026-27, the platform recorded GMV of approximately ₹1.48 lakh crore.
The rapid widening of the buyer base reflects the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promote transparent, technology-driven and inclusive public procurement across India. With government departments, public sector organisations and other public institutions increasingly using the platform, GeM has emerged as a key pillar of India’s digital procurement ecosystem.
As GeM enters its second decade, its expanding buyer and seller base signals a significant shift towards a more connected, transparent and inclusive government procurement marketplace.
