The Ports of Genoa handled a record 3 million TEU of container traffic in 2025, marking a major milestone for Italy’s largest port system and underscoring its growing role in European and Mediterranean trade.

Port authorities said the record throughput was driven by strong import and export demand, improved terminal productivity and enhanced connectivity with key global shipping routes. Growth in container volumes was supported by sectors such as manufacturing, consumer goods and agri-food exports, alongside steady transshipment activity.

Officials highlighted ongoing infrastructure upgrades, digitalisation initiatives and improved rail and inland connectivity as key contributors to the performance. Investments aimed at easing congestion and speeding up cargo handling helped the port system accommodate higher volumes efficiently.

Industry observers noted that the achievement strengthens Genoa’s position as a critical gateway for southern Europe, linking Italian and central European markets with Asia, the Americas and Africa.

Looking ahead, the Ports of Genoa Authority said it will continue focusing on capacity expansion, sustainability projects and multimodal transport to support future growth and maintain competitiveness.
