Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has marked another milestone in indigenous shipbuilding with the commissioning of Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Ajit on October 9, 2026, strengthening India’s maritime security and coastal surveillance capabilities.

The indigenously built Fast Patrol Vessel was commissioned at Goa Shipyard Limited in Goa. The ceremony was presided over by Dr Sirish Choudhary, Principal Integrated Financial Advisor of the Indian Coast Guard.

ICGS Ajit is designed to undertake a range of maritime security operations, including coastal patrolling, fisheries protection, surveillance of India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), anti-smuggling and anti-piracy missions, search and rescue, and marine pollution response.

The 51.43-metre-long vessel has a displacement of 330 tonnes and is powered by twin marine diesel engines driving controllable-pitch propellers. It can achieve a top speed of more than 27 knots and has an operational range of approximately 1,500 nautical miles. The vessel incorporates more than 65% indigenous content, highlighting the capabilities of India’s domestic defence manufacturing sector.

ICGS Ajit will be based at Okha in Gujarat, supporting the Coast Guard’s operations along India’s western coastline.

The vessel’s commissioning reinforces Goa Shipyard Limited’s contribution to India’s defence shipbuilding programme and the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Its induction will enhance the Indian Coast Guard’s ability to protect coastal and offshore areas, enforce maritime laws and respond to emergencies at sea.

The development also reflects India’s continued focus on strengthening indigenous shipbuilding and modernising its maritime security infrastructure.
