The Port of Gothenburg has posted its strongest-ever container performance, handling a record 934,000 TEUs in 2025, surpassing all previous annual volumes. The milestone underlines the port’s position as the leading container gateway in Scandinavia, supported by stable demand from Swedish industry and strong connectivity with global trade lanes.
According to port authorities, the record throughput was driven by higher volumes of both imports and exports, with consumer goods, industrial components, forest products, and automotive cargo forming a significant share of container traffic. Improved schedule reliability, expanded liner services, and continued efficiency gains at the container terminals also played a key role in sustaining growth throughout the year, despite ongoing volatility in global shipping markets.
The port credited long-term investments in infrastructure, digitalisation, and sustainability initiatives for helping it manage rising volumes without congestion. Rail-linked inland connections to key logistics hubs across Sweden further strengthened Gothenburg’s role as a national gateway, enabling faster and more environmentally efficient cargo movement. With container demand remaining resilient, the Port of Gothenburg expects volumes to stay firm in 2026 as it continues to enhance capacity and service quality for shipping lines and cargo owners.
