Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), a Navratna defence public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, has signed a contract with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) to construct four hybrid Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs), strengthening its presence in India’s commercial shipbuilding sector.
The contract is valued at approximately ₹1,032.07 crore, including GST, and covers the construction and delivery of four vessels designed to support ONGC’s offshore oil and gas exploration and production activities. The project is scheduled for completion within 48 months of the notification of award issued on July 30, 2026.
The vessels will provide essential logistical support to offshore installations, including the transportation of equipment, supplies and other operational requirements. Their hybrid propulsion systems and battery technology are intended to support more efficient offshore operations.
The order marks an important expansion of GRSE’s commercial shipbuilding portfolio, which has traditionally been associated with naval and defence vessels. It also aligns with India’s broader efforts to strengthen domestic shipbuilding capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign-built commercial vessels.
The contract forms part of the government’s push to aggregate domestic demand for commercial ships and encourage Indian shipyards to expand their capacity and technological capabilities.
For GRSE, the ONGC order provides an opportunity to diversify its business, build expertise in specialised offshore vessels and strengthen its role in supporting India’s energy infrastructure. The project is also expected to contribute to the development of the country’s maritime manufacturing ecosystem.
