Hapag-Lloyd AG has completed the acquisition of a 25 per cent stake in APM Terminals Maasvlakte II in Rotterdam, following unconditional approval from the relevant antitrust authorities. The investment strengthens the shipping line’s global terminal portfolio and secures long-term access to handling capacity at one of Europe’s most advanced container terminals.
The investment will be managed through Hanseatic Global Terminals (HGT), Hapag-Lloyd’s independent terminal and infrastructure business. The partnership with APM Terminals is expected to support the terminal’s continued development and create long-term value for customers while reinforcing Rotterdam’s position as a major European trade gateway.
“We are very pleased to have completed this transaction and become a shareholder in Maasvlakte II. Together with APM Terminals, we look forward to supporting the terminal’s continued growth and development, creating long-term value for our customers and further strengthening Rotterdam’s role as a major European gateway,” said Dheeraj Bhatia, Chief Terminal and Infrastructure Officer (CTIO) of Hapag-Lloyd AG and CEO of Hanseatic Global Terminals.
Harold Kunst, Managing Director of APM Terminals Maasvlakte II, said Hapag-Lloyd’s participation would support the terminal’s long-term growth and ongoing expansion. He added that the terminal would continue to focus on safe and reliable operations while delivering additional capacity and improved performance for customers.
Maasvlakte II is a key European hub for the Gemini Cooperation between Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk. The terminal is currently undergoing a major expansion programme that includes additional berth and yard capacity, along with further automation.
Upon completion of the expansion, the terminal is expected to achieve an annual handling capacity of approximately 5.4 million TEU, further strengthening its position in Europe’s container handling network.
Established in 2023, Hanseatic Global Terminals operates as an independent entity within the Hapag-Lloyd Group, focusing on terminal investments and infrastructure. Under its 2030 vision, HGT aims to become a leading global terminal operator, with plans to expand its portfolio to approximately 30 terminal investments worldwide.
