Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), a Miniratna enterprise under the Ministry of Defence, has signed a series of strategic Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to accelerate its green and commercial shipbuilding ambitions.
During the Maritime Week held in Mumbai on October 29 and 30, HSL inked an MoU with the Indian Ports Association (IPA) to develop hydrogen-powered tugs under the Government of India’s Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP). The initiative aims to promote sustainable and low-emission marine operations across Indian ports.
The shipyard also signed an MoU with the Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCI) for docking and repair of DCI’s fleet at HSL, further expanding its ship repair portfolio. In addition, HSL entered into strategic cooperation agreements with partners from India, Korea, and the Middle East to advance its technological capabilities and global collaborations.
Showcasing its ongoing infrastructure augmentation and modernisation initiatives, HSL highlighted efforts to enhance capacity, productivity, and turnaround efficiency. The shipyard is also preparing to bid for commercial vessels such as Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) and Medium Range (MR) Tankers, along with naval platforms like Landing Platform Docks (LPDs), in partnership with reputed international shipbuilders.
In line with its long-term growth strategy, HSL is exploring the establishment of a greenfield shipyard in Andhra Pradesh to cater to the rising demand for both defence and commercial shipbuilding projects.
During the event, HSL’s senior management took part in panel discussions and technical sessions on advancing India’s shipbuilding and repair ecosystem, promoting green and digital technologies, and enhancing self-reliance in defence and commercial marine sectors.
The event also facilitated high-level interactions between HSL and key stakeholders — including ship owners, management firms, foreign OEMs, and domestic technology companies — to explore collaboration in advanced vessel design, automation, and green propulsion technologies.
