South Korean container shipping line HMM has launched a new container service linking India with Mombasa, Kenya, strengthening maritime connectivity between the Indian subcontinent and East Africa.
The new service is expected to provide exporters and importers with an additional shipping option for moving containers between key Indian gateways and Mombasa. The direct connection can support trade in manufactured goods, agricultural commodities, consumer products and other cargo moving between the two regions.
Mombasa is one of East Africa’s major maritime gateways and serves Kenya as well as several landlocked countries in the wider East African market. Improved liner connectivity can therefore support both regional trade and inland distribution.
For Indian exporters, the new service could provide greater access to East African markets while offering an alternative to existing shipping networks. Kenya is an important trading partner for India, with bilateral trade covering pharmaceuticals, machinery, textiles, chemicals, agricultural products and other commodities.
The service also strengthens HMM’s network in the Indian Ocean and East African markets as carriers continue to adjust their service networks in response to changing trade flows and customer demand.
Better container connectivity can help businesses improve shipment planning, transit options and supply-chain reliability. It may also support the movement of smaller and time-sensitive consignments that depend on regular liner services.
The launch comes as shipping lines continue to expand or redesign services connecting India with Africa, reflecting growing commercial links between the two regions.
HMM’s new India–Mombasa service is expected to provide additional capacity and connectivity for containerised trade, supporting the expansion of India–East Africa maritime links.
