India’s maritime administration has prohibited the deployment of Indian seafarers to Malaysia’s Sarawak region, introducing restrictions that shipping companies, recruitment agencies and seafarers will need to take into account when planning overseas assignments.

The directive, issued by the Directorate General of Maritime Administration, concerns the deployment of Indian maritime personnel to the Malaysian region of Sarawak. Such restrictions can affect crew recruitment, vessel staffing arrangements and the placement of Indian seafarers on ships operating in the affected area.

For shipping companies and manning agencies, the order highlights the importance of checking current regulatory requirements before assigning Indian crew members to international vessels. Employers may need to review existing deployment plans and coordinate with relevant authorities to ensure compliance.

Indian seafarers are an important part of the global maritime workforce, serving across commercial shipping, offshore operations and other maritime activities. Regulatory changes affecting overseas employment can therefore have implications for crew planning and employment opportunities.
