Cross-border trade between India and China has resumed through the Shipki La pass in Himachal Pradesh after a gap of six years, marking the revival of an important traditional trade route. The reopening is expected to strengthen local economies, improve border commerce, and restore livelihood opportunities for traders in the region.
Trade through Shipki La had remained suspended since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent border-related restrictions. Its reopening follows coordinated efforts by authorities from both countries to facilitate the movement of approved goods under established border trade arrangements.
The restored corridor will enable the exchange of designated commodities between traders on both sides of the border, benefiting communities in the Kinnaur district and adjoining areas. Officials expect the revival to boost regional economic activity while supporting traditional cross-border trade practices.
