The Indian government has eased foreign direct investment (FDI) rules for the e-commerce sector to strengthen exports of made-in-India products and enhance the country’s position in global digital trade. The policy changes are aimed at improving market access for Indian manufacturers, exporters and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through cross-border e-commerce platforms.

The revised framework is expected to simplify compliance requirements and encourage greater foreign investment in export-oriented e-commerce operations. By facilitating smoother participation of global e-commerce companies, the government aims to expand international sales opportunities for domestically produced goods across key overseas markets.

The reforms are likely to benefit sectors such as handicrafts, textiles, apparel, leather goods, engineering products, consumer goods and other high-value manufactured items that have witnessed growing demand through online retail channels. Improved logistics integration and digital trade infrastructure are also expected to support faster and more efficient export fulfilment.

The initiative aligns with India’s broader strategy of increasing merchandise exports, strengthening the “Make in India” programme and enabling MSMEs to access global customers through digital marketplaces. Industry stakeholders believe the policy changes will help improve the competitiveness of Indian products while attracting additional investment into the country’s e-commerce and logistics ecosystem.

With cross-border online trade continuing to expand worldwide, the relaxation of FDI norms is expected to accelerate export growth, create new business opportunities for Indian enterprises and reinforce India’s role as a major global sourcing and manufacturing hub.
