A parliamentary panel has urged the Indian government to move swiftly towards concluding a trade agreement with the United States, while calling for stronger safeguards to protect Indian exporters from potential tariff pressures and disruptions.

The panel stressed that an early resolution of trade negotiations would provide greater certainty to businesses and help Indian exporters plan investments, production and shipments to the US market. It also highlighted the importance of ensuring that the final agreement delivers meaningful market access for Indian products.

    Focus on exporter protection

The panel has called for measures to shield exporters from the impact of higher tariffs and changing trade conditions. Export-oriented sectors that depend heavily on the US market could face increased costs and competitive pressure if tariff barriers remain in place.

It therefore recommended that the government pursue provisions that improve the competitiveness of Indian goods while ensuring that exporters are not disproportionately affected by changes in US trade policy.

    Importance for bilateral trade

The United States is one of India’s most important trading partners, making progress on a bilateral trade agreement significant for both merchandise and services trade. A comprehensive pact could improve market access, reduce trade barriers and create opportunities for Indian companies across several sectors.

For Indian exporters, greater clarity on tariffs and regulatory requirements could also support longer-term supply-chain planning and encourage businesses to expand their US-focused operations.

Government urged to maintain a balanced approach

While supporting an early agreement, the parliamentary panel emphasised that speed should not come at the expense of India’s economic interests. It called for negotiations that secure favourable conditions for Indian exporters while protecting sensitive domestic sectors.

The panel’s recommendations add pressure for both sides to resolve outstanding issues and accelerate negotiations. The government is expected to continue engaging with US counterparts on tariffs, market access and other areas of concern.

Potential boost for exporters and supply chains

A stable India-US trade framework could provide a boost to India’s export ambitions by improving predictability for businesses. Sectors such as engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, textiles, electronics, chemicals and other manufactured products could benefit from improved access to the US market.

For logistics and supply-chain operators, stronger bilateral trade could also translate into higher cargo volumes on India-US shipping and air-freight routes.

The parliamentary panel’s call comes as India seeks to strengthen its position in global trade while helping exporters navigate an increasingly uncertain international trade environment. The emphasis on an early deal combined with safeguards for exporters reflects the need to balance faster market access with protection against potential tariff and competitive pressures.
