In a press release on Thursday the government said that the Indian Railways registered a cumulative freight loading of 1154.67 million metric (MT) from April to December 2023, surpassing 2022’s figure of 1109.38 MT by 45.28 MT. Railways generated revenues of Rs 12,5106.2 crore, marking a Rs 4,626.92 crore improvement compared to the same period last year.
Diving deeper into the figures
In December 2023 alone, the originating freight loading reached 138.99 MT, a 6.37% increase from December 2022’s 130.66 MT. Freight revenue for December 2023 amounted to Rs 15,097.61 crore, showcasing a 3.59% improvement over December 2022’s Rs 14,574.25 crore.
For December 2023, Indian Railways handled 69 MT of Coal, 16.54 MT of Iron Ore, 6 MT of Pig Iron and Finished Steel, 7.23 MT of Cement (Excl. Clinker), 5.07 MT of Clinker, 4.26 MT of Foodgrains, 5.77 MT of Fertilizers, 4.33 MT of Mineral Oil, 7.70 MT of Containers, and 9.76 MT of Balance Other Goods.
