Jupiter Wagons Limited (JWL) has secured an order worth ₹11.4 billion (₹1,140 crore), including taxes, from the Ministry of Railways for the manufacture and supply of 2,583 freight wagons, strengthening its position in India’s railway freight transportation sector.

The order covers two wagon types — BOXNHL and BOXNS — and reflects Indian Railways’ continued demand for freight rolling stock to support the country’s expanding rail-based logistics network.

Alongside the latest railway order, Jupiter Wagons said its private-sector order book remains strong, driven by demand from private freight operators, wagon leasing companies and core-sector customers. The company expects to secure additional orders worth approximately ₹2,000 crore in the fourth quarter of FY27.

Near-term demand prospects have also improved following the Ministry of Railways’ release of a tender for the procurement of 5,800 BOBRN wagons, creating further opportunities for manufacturers.

Commenting on the order, Vivek Lohia, Managing Director of Jupiter Wagons, said the award demonstrated Indian Railways’ continued confidence in the company’s delivery capabilities.

He highlighted the company’s backward integration across the wagon manufacturing value chain, encompassing castings, bogies, couplers and brake systems. Jupiter Wagons is also planning to extend its integration capabilities to wheelsets through its Odisha facility.

According to the company, this integrated manufacturing model supports better cost control, consistent product quality and improved delivery timelines.

The order comes amid the government’s efforts to increase rail’s share in India’s freight movement under the National Rail Plan. Investments in freight wagon capacity, Dedicated Freight Corridors and the PM Gati Shakti initiative are expected to strengthen multimodal connectivity, improve logistics efficiency and support the development of a more competitive freight transportation network.
