Jupiter Wagons Limited is set to bid for a massive ₹20,000-crore contract for Mumbai’s suburban rail network, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion into large-scale passenger rolling stock projects.

Managing Director Vivek Lohia confirmed the company’s intent to participate in the upcoming tender, which is expected to cover the design, manufacturing, and supply of modern trainsets aimed at upgrading Mumbai’s heavily used suburban rail system.

The project, one of the largest in India’s urban rail segment, is part of broader efforts to modernize suburban mobility in Mumbai, improve passenger capacity, and enhance commuter safety and comfort.

Jupiter Wagons, traditionally focused on freight wagons, has been steadily diversifying into passenger rail solutions, including metro coaches and electric multiple units (EMUs). Analysts say securing this contract could significantly boost the company’s order book and strengthen its position in India’s evolving rail manufacturing space.

The tender is expected to attract strong competition from established domestic and global rolling stock manufacturers, given its scale and strategic importance. Industry experts note that execution capabilities, technological strength, and cost competitiveness will be key factors in determining the winner.

If successful, the bid would mark a major milestone for Jupiter Wagons, positioning it as a key player in India’s suburban rail modernization push.
